Re-entry week: (lack of) groceries, a kid brag, diet update

Getting home at midnight on a Sunday night and working Monday = NOT IDEAL, but I’m happy to report this week has been fine.

Work has been pretty constant but not terrible.

No one has grocery shopped yet, but we’ve survived on some pantry staples, frozen meat, etc. Ethan had an entire frozen pizza by himself the other night. We ate out a little. We could have made groceries happen, but just sort of… haven’t.

Monday we did go out, for Mexican, because of course we were in withdrawal.

Tuesday I cooked at home (ground beef + pinto beans simmered in homemade salsa roja).

Wednesday we had Asher’s Academic Award Night at school!

Last night, Thursday, I had figured I’d finally get groceries but then I worked until almost 5:30, did a home workout, and then it was 6:30 and I was hungry and tired and I had zero motivation to go out for groceries. We ate leftovers and walked Charlie (in the light, relatively warm rain- which was really dreamy, actually!), cleaned up the house a bit, I read in the sunroom in our new recliner (with the patio door open/ rain sounds- also dreamy!) before crawling into bed and watching an episode of The Pitt. Much better evening vs grocery shopping. Hahaha.

(For people marveling at how we can not buy groceries for a whole week after a long trip, I don’t know- I guess enough stuff actually lasts? Like we still had eggs, my tomatoes/ onion/jalapeno leftovers were all fine, some yogurt still looked and smelled okay, we had deli turkey and salami and cheese in the fridge, some clementines, canned tuna, then of course frozen meat, we had canned pinto beans, I have pasta sauce and noodles, oats, frozen turkey burgers…. and even some English muffins that were fine (weirdly- do I want to know why those last so long?? hm.). The kids always buy lunch at school, too.)

Backing up to the Awards Night, can I just brag on Asher for a sec?? He got an award for having a cumulative 4.0 GPA! Super proud of him!!

While I’m bragging, let me do Ethan, too. 😉 He had tennis try-outs this week and made Varsity. 🙂 There aren’t as many Varsity spots in tennis as in some other sports, so he was really happy! He has his first invitational today- an overnight in Brookfield and he has to miss the whole day of school today for that, too.

Charlie’s “diet” is going well so far. I do feel BAD not giving him as many treats! We definitely had spoiled him and now whenever I eat he looks at me with those big brown pleading eyes like, Mom! Where’s my snack?!?!

We used to sprinkle 3-4 little treats on top of his food; I’ve cut that back to just 1. We have slightly decreased his actual food portion, just a little. And when we pass the treat house, I am now just breaking off a little tiny piece of a treat instead of a whole one. We’ve basically completely stopped giving him “bites” of our food. (We caved and gave him ONE piece of popcorn last night but usually he would get several pieces of popcorn…).

Here he is when I was suiting him up for another walk yesterday:

hehehe his face!! He’s like, what are we doing. It’s nap time right now, why are we walking AGAIN?

(He loves going for walks, so this is actually not a problem at all! He had just been napping when I came upstairs for a break to walk him and he seemed a little confused.)

At the treat house. At first I said, “No snacks!” and then he jumped up and pawed at the pail, lol! 🤣

“Mom, open that treat pail RIGHT. NOW.”

It is hard to avoid the treat house because it’s on the most convenient loop. And trust me, he knows where that house is.

Look what I picked up the other day?

I feel like everyone has been talking about this book, so…finally my turn! 🙂

Happy Friday, all! I’m looking forward to today because after a meeting-heavy week, I have NO MEETINGS TODAY (except a quick team huddle). Looking forward to some relaxed, focused work time today.

Daily Gratitude:

I am grateful for that walk in the light rain last night. Left my phone at home and it was dusk and birds were chirping and the rain sound was so relaxingpeaceful.

  1. Charlie doesn’t look fat- he’s just fluffy! Seriously- I’ll bet he’ll slim down quickly. Good idea to just give him a little bit of the treat rather than a whole one- you’ll never get past that house without giving him anything.

Congrats to both boys!!! Brag all you want! You have two incredible kids. They have jobs, play sports at a high level, AND do well in school. How could you not brag about them?

I hope you like the book! Sometimes there’s a lot of pressure when everyone has hyped it up so much.

Yes, I am astonished that you could make it through the week without grocery shopping. But it sounds like no one is starving, and I don’t blame you for not wanting to go after work!

  2. I’m impressed you were able to make it this long without grocery shopping! I rarely do grocery delivery because it’s more expensive, but sometimes when we come back from a trip the splurge feels worth it to me. It’s nice to come home and within a few hours have the house restocked. I wish I was better at using stuff we had in the pantry to make random meals though!

  3. I am surprised you can live without groceries! Hahaha. We are the type of family that really needs fresh veg and fruit right after a trip.
    Congrats to Asher!!! That’s awesome.

  4. I’ve never tracked how long I can go between grocery store visits, but I know I can stretch things out for a long time when I want to. We have a good roster of panty and freezer staples, and sometimes being forced to work with what I have makes me unexpectedly creative and we get some good meals as a result.

As I said, Doggo thankfully has a magic metabolism, so we haven’t had to limit treats for weight control, but she’s had a few bouts of belly trouble that have required keeping her on a bland diet. We had to go for nearly a month with no treats last fall! I’m not sure if it was harder for her or for us.
