Happy May! + MayBloPoMo ;)

From a tree in my backyard… in a beer glass. 😅

I think after my lengthy blogging streak on vacation, plus some long “recappy” posts when we returned, I maybe hit a blogging saturation point, or something. Sorry for the radio silence all week!

I guess I felt like I didn’t have anything too significant to say. Mostly though, I was just busy with work and it didn’t really fit in.

I miss blogging when I don’t do it, though. I’ve been feeling a pull to write some shorter, casual posts again. I’d been mulling over the idea of doing a daily blog challenge in May, much like NaBloPoMo, but forcing myself to keep the posts quick and shorter (<500 words).

IRONICALLY, Jenny posted yesterday that she’s been in a little rut too and is embarking on a project to post daily in May! Perfect, Jenny and I can team up and be the unofficial leaders of: MayBloPoMo. 😆

Let’s see if I can do better this round than actual NaBloPoMo when I was a flunkie. lol.

The big event of this week was that we toured the University of Wisconsin- Madison on Wednesday with Ethan!

It was nice. Maybe a bit anticlimactic for me, since I went there, but there have certainly been changes since I was there. (This month marks my 20 year college graduation anniversary!) Also, it was wild to be there with my OWN SON almost college-aged?!

5/13/2006

Ethan liked it! He didn’t actually say a lot. Weird for a 17 year old boy, I know. Ha. It may have been a little anticlimactic for him too. He was like…. ‘I’ve been on this campus a million times’…. He did grow up in the Madison area.

At first he didn’t even really see the point in doing an actual tour. But I encouraged it, and I think he was glad in retrospect.

I can’t quite feel out his overall thoughts right now. He was very smitten with Marquette University in Milwaukee AND I think he may feel like Madison is maybe too much of “same old, same old” (again, having grown up here). I get that.

Marquette is private, Jesuit, more of that “family” feel, mid-sized, plus has the urban thing he wants. In many ways I could really see him there.

But, he liked a lot about UW, too. And Madison is awesome. I guess we shall see!

I didn’t get pics of the iconic parts of campus really… it was a group tour. Didn’t want to be the weird mom….

We had lunch at State Street Brats afterwards, classic campus spot. 😉

I’ll close with a few words of inspiration (cleaned out inbox and saved these from James Clear’s newsletters):

“You are not your grand plans. You are your daily patterns.”

If your body could vote on your daily schedule, what would it immediately veto?

Daily Gratitude:

I am grateful for some tasty, healthy meals this week:

tuna tostadas!

ground turkey/spinach/ sweet potato

egg/chicken scramble

  1. I’m glad there’ll be more posts from you and Jenny this month! I can totally understand wanting to be in a different environment for college versus going somewhere you grew up. It sounds like Marquette might be a great fit. I love the post about what parts of your schedule your body would veto.

    1. Yes, for me, I grew up about an hour away from here (near Milwauee, actually), so for ME, UW Madison was a change. I remember meeting kids and also had a friend who was from a Madison suburb, and I remember thinking back then, that seems a little boring to go to college right in your backyard like that! So, I do get it. If Ethan ends up going to school in Milwaukee, he’d basically be doing the reverse of what I did! 🙂

    1. I did look it up after you talked about it before! It looks awesome. But he really ideally wants a bit more “urban/ bigger city vibe”, like campus IN a city more….

  2. YESSSS!!!! May is shaping up to be an excellent month!!!

I subscribe to the James Clear newsletter, but somehow I just read it without absorbing anything. It’s like I need someone else to read it for me and pick out the good quotes.

    1. Haha, well, I tend to get behind on reading newsletters and then I often read a few at once and then I like to save especially good quotes to my “Quotes” file in Google Keep. 🙂

  3. MayBloPoMo!!! It’s the official name of our project.

Madison IS awesome… but I guess it’s Ethan’s choice! I know you probably already talked about this but I can’t remember- does he know what he wants to study yet?

I need to get Angie seriously thinking about college. We were very set on USF (in Tampa) but now she’s saying she wants to stay in town and go to FAU, because that’s what her boyfriend is doing. That’s fine, but I’m, ahem, encouraging her to keep her options open. Maybe we need to schedule a tour of USF.

    1. Ahh, that’s tough… following a boyfriend to school is so tempting, probably common, at that age, but as adults, we can see the potential issues with that… Well, I’m sure she will figure out the right thing to do! What does Angie want to go to school for? I can’t remember either if you’ve shared that. Does she know yet? Ethan is not sure. He’s currently leaning toward something in the health sciences- maybe eventually optometry? he’s also considered NP or PA, and last night he was mulling over physical therapy. Then other days he says he thinks maybe he’d like to go into law! He has always been strong in reading/writing and likes history and he thinks that seems appealing to him too. But overall I think he’s MOST drawn to something a bit more hands on- like not just sitting at a desk all day, he says. Just for sure nothing super math heavy like engineering- he hates math.

  5. Woo! MayBloPoMo is going to get me back into reading blogs more regularly! I’m pumped!

Love that photo from your graduation. You HAVE NOT AGED.

It sounds like Ethan has a lot of great options to explore! How nice that you have so many excellent choices nearby.

    1. Haha, I assure you, I’ve aged! But thanks for that. 😉

I am excited, too! I feel like I have struggled to keep up with blog reading lately too, especially with our recent trip and being away. I hope this will kickstart me to be back to it more also!
