Swim meet/ mini-vacay!

Writing from our hotel room in glamorous Brown Deer, WI. As I mentioned, Asher and I are here for 3 nights for Asher’s State swim meet.

We arrived last night (Thursday), later than ideal. He had practice from 5-6 and then they had a team dinner at 6:15 at Noodles…. (Like, why couldn’t the team dinner have been Wednesday night, instead of the night before the meet when many people still had to drive 1.5 hours to Milwaukee to the hotel?? Just sayin’….)

By the time Asher got home from that and then SHOWERED (which he insisted upon 🙄), it was almost 8:00 before we hit the road. Yawn. We got to the hotel just before 9:30 pm.

Fortunately, it turned out Asher did not have to be to the pool quite as early as we thought. (They have a separate warm-up pool, so he didn’t need to be there for general warm-ups.)

We settled in and he puttered on his phone, we made microwave popcorn, and I stretched out to read for a little bit.

Just started reading MY SISTER’S BOOK!! So excited.

This morning he slept in, while I woke up early and headed to the (nice and quiet lobby) to work for a bit. I took a flex day today, so I’m not fully “off”.

Made some tea and cranked out a surprisingly productive ~2 hours of work before heading upstairs to shower.

There’s a nice hot breakfast at the hotel, and we headed out for the pool (just 5 minutes away) by 9 am. A relaxing morning!

The swim meet itself was a little bit of a bust today. Oh well. You win some, you lose swim. Asher had an AWESOME 100 fly race, dropping about 6 seconds from his best time…. only to have the official approach him afterwards to tell him he was disqualified because he apparently flinched on the blocks (considered a false start). BLERGH. What a bummer!

But honestly, it’s fine. This was a ‘bonus’ event for him (he’s not qualified in this one) and he wasn’t going to make Finals in it, anyway. Would it have been nice to have the time count as a new Best Time? Yes, but it didn’t “really” matter in this case.

He then had the 50 free, where he swam fine but added about 0.25 seconds to his best time. Not totally surprising, as he dropped a bunch of time on this event repeatedly in the last several meets. It’s not super common to continuously drop time every single time you swim a race (unless you’re a brand new swimmer, I guess). And it’s extra hard on a short race like the 50 free to keep shaving time.

The high school boys were all tapered for Sectionals 2 weeks ago (where they reduce training volume leading up so they can swim at peak performance), and then they still had high school State last week. I figured they’d be a little “raced out” by this weekend….

We had a great lunch out at Cafe Hollander in Mequon after the morning session with a bunch of his teammates and parents.

Now, back to the hotel to CHILL. I have to do more work, I picked up a cold fountain iced tea to sip on, and we have no major plans tonight.

Asher may go back to the pool with his teammates to watch a couple of the seniors who qualified for Finals. I think I am going to sit that session out. 😉 I love watching swimming and all, but I don’t really need to sit through an entire session full of 200 yard backstrokes and 200 yard breaststrokes that my kid is not in. 😉

I am planning to workout in the exercise room, I think, read and/or watch a movie and just relax! It sounds glorious. 🙂 No big dinner plans- I think the other families are just planning to grab takeout Subway or something on the way back from the pool and eat together in the lobby. Works for me!

Here’s a nice pic from Asher’s high school swim banquet Tuesday night:

And look at this pic of Ethan and Asher I stumbled across yesterday! From 2015, so they would have been…. let’s see…. 5 and 6 years old, I think? At swim lessons!!! How far Asher has come…. 💕

Bonus pic of Asher not swim related but adorable and in the same bunch of pics!

He was so cute and sweet and snuggly and innocent back then! Sigh. Ha.

(I laughed out loud at a bumper sticker we saw in the restaurant parking lot just now- it said ,”Mom of Sassholes”. HAHA. I pointed that out to Asher and said maybe I need one of those, hah hah. He smirked at me. 😆 (Seriously though, lately…. )

Daily Gratitude:

I am grateful for a little mini-vacay! 😉 His meet events are spread out over 3 days, but there should be ample downtime opportunity for me, too, which I am ON BOARD WITH.
