Friday 5: Randoms

🔷 Last night Ethan had a soccer game in Poynette, which is a roughly ~30 minute drive. He warned me that the opposing team had a particularly poor record – I think he said, “Don’t bother coming.” I was like, Pssh, you’re a senior, down to a literal handful of games left – I’m going!! It was also supposed to be quite rainy, but I put on rain gear and packed a hat and gloves (didn’t end up needing- thankfully it wasn’t very cold) and went anyway.

Well. Ethan played exactly 13 minutes (and scored 2 goals!) at which point the overall score was already 5-0 😬, so the coach took out all the starters and put all the reserves in.

This other team was bad. Poor guys! I felt bad for them. CANNOT BE FUN to get absolutely stomped on.

Thankfully there was an awning to stand under (and the rain actually stopped), but Ivan and I both drove out there, in separate cars (Ivan headed straight from work), to basically watch all the reserves crush this team. Ha. The final score was 11-0, at 60 minutes, when the “mercy rule” went into effect and the game was called.

He has another game tonight, and then playoffs start next week! Ethan’s team is the #1 seed!! Exciting!!

🔷 THE BREWERS ARE GOING TO THE WORLD SERIES!!

After Ethan’s game, Ivan and I decided to go catch the rest of the in-process game at Buffalo Wild Wings. There was a good crowd of Brewers fans and it was fun! We stayed until the end, which was a bit tense, but they won and swept the series!

I will admit I’m pretty much a playoffs-only Brewers fan (there’s just soooo….many…. games….in the regular season…), but this was super exciting. This will be the first time IN MY LIFETIME that the Brewers go to the World Series. (Last time was 1982 and I was born in ’83.)

🔷I didn’t have any meetings until noon yesterday, so I took myself out for tea + a focused work session.

How cute is this mug they gave me?! I continue to adore the new-ish coffee shop just a couple blocks from my house!

🔷 Charlie gets a haircut today at 12:15. His hair is pretty long and curly right now! Here he is giving me his typical side eye whenever he’s napping and I suggest a walk. 😅

“umm, pass? Go ask someone else?”

🔷 It’s my birthday tomorrow! 43….

I have a long weekend coming up, too. Ivan and I booked a little 2 night fall getaway from Sunday to Tuesday at a cute inn near Lake Geneva, WI (only about an hour from home). I’m excited! It looks super cozy and relaxing and the weather looks excellent. Fall colors are getting close to peak and I just want/need some downtime. Ivan and I haven’t been away just the two of us in ages, too. Hoping for some nice walks around the lake, exploring cute shops in town, a couple meals out, some reading/ relaxing and hopefully ending the nights cozily lounging by the fireplace in our room! 🙂

Quote of the Day:

“You always have the power to have no opinion.” – Marcus Aurelius

Heard this yesterday and really liked it! This wasn’t in the context of like, not caring about current events or important topics, but more so as in:

You don’t have to have an opinion about everything. You can practice just being neutral more often. You don’t have to have a strong opinion about every book or restaurant someone mentions, and you don’t have to take a side on every disagreement. You don’t have to weigh in on everything someone else does, or how another person lives their life, just because it’s maybe not how you’d do it. You don’t even have to waste mental energy deciding if you’re Team A or Team B on every topic you hear about. You just don’t have to make a judgment about everything! You don’t always have to be “right”, even if it’s only in your head. We don’t have to fret over every little thing we can’t even control. We can sometimes just… not have an opinion. 🙂

I like it! 🙂

Daily Gratitude:

I am grateful for the Brewers going to the World Series! So fun and exciting!

  1. Okay, first of all HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! Second of all, I’m excited for your weekend getaway. Short little semi-local trips rock! Especially when they’re couples trips.

Yes yes yes yes yes to not having to have an opinion about everything. Each of us only has so much bandwidth. Keeping the neutral stuff neutral frees up more room to enjoy the good stuff/deal with the not-good stuff.

  2. Happy birthday Kae. Funny reading this – it makes me feel a little old to realize you are 1 year younger than my eldest child! Well of course you are – she has boys a similar age to yours.

As a Canadian Blue Jays fan, I get your excitement about your Brewers.

Also LOVE the quote about not having to have an opinion about everything I practice that a lot more than I used to

That getaway sounds wonderful and relaxing!

  3. Congrats to your team! I also love watching a big game in a sports bar—the energy is fantastic. Baseball is my favorite sport to watch, and I love this time of year!

  4. Oh, I like that quote, too! And your take on it. Practicing neutrality more often would do a LOT of us some good.

    Congrats to Ethan’s team!

    And woo! Happy birthday!!!!!

  5. Ha, I would have gone to that soccer game too. Our last football game, our team stomped all over the opponents (kind of the football equivalent to Ethan’s soccer game) and they played the second half with a running clock just to get it over with. And, the field was so muddy the band had to play their halftime show on the track. But there was no way I was going to miss it! Like you, we’re down to a handful of games left and I’m going to every single one.

I’m excited for your getaway! You need and deserve a relaxing weekend. And happy birthday!!! I hope it’s fun and I want to hear all about it.

  6. Happy birthday! I love that you have a little get away with Ivan to look forward to. The Lake Geneva area is so pretty! A blogging friend lived there for awhile so I have visited. It’s so nice when your bday falls on a weekend.

Wow 2 goals in 13 min! Way to go Ethan! Paul is doing rec soccer and he is on an amazing team. They don’t technically keep score but his team scores 6-9 goals/game and has had one goal scored during their entire season! Some of the kids are so so good. One had a hat trick last weekend. So it’s very fun to watch but we end up cheering for the other team when they block a goal because we feel so bad for them!!

  7. Okay so I am not much of a baseball fan, but our Tampa Bay Rays are in the World Series so I’m bandwagoning. It means we are rivals! Muahahahaha.

I’m so glad you took a getaway for your birthday. I am a fan of doing stuff like that!

  8. Belated happy birthday! I’ve only just returned from “holiday land” myself and catching back up on blog posts.

Also, love love love your quote. I’ve been trying to make more of an effort to say to people “I don’t feel informed enough to have an opinion on this topic” when it comes to current world events, so that quote felt really timely for me. I love it. There is so much power in acknowledging no opinion, instead of feeling pressured to take one side or another!

  9. Haven’t commented in forever, but thank you for sharing that quote. I need to print it out and wallpaper my apartment and office with it. Hope you enjoyed Lake Geneva!
