Thursday updates

I was going to title this “Asher Updates” but figured he might not like to have his name in the TITLE. haha.

But, these updates are all related to Asher.

  • Volleyball Banquet

On Monday night we went to his end-of-season volleyball banquet at school. They had nets up in the gym, so all the boys played for a while before dinner and coaches’ speeches. It was a potluck. (I brought two packs of store bought cookies. In my defense, they let us know on Sunday afternoon that it would be a potluck… on Monday after work. I need more notice for a more creative contribution. lol.)

The coaches speeches were really nice, and these types of things always make me grateful that the boys participate in team sports.

  • Braces!

Yesterday afternoon, Asher got braces!

I unfortunately screwed up and scheduled the appt at the same time as a work class I’m taking. Thankfully Ivan was able to leave work and take him.

I have no photos so far. Sounds like it all went fine! I guess Ivan didn’t realize that you’re supposed to take a before and after pic. 😉

Currently now 3 of 4 of our household has braces. 🤑🤑 We’re happy to be single-handedly helping to fund our orthodontist’s lake house! (Who is Asher’s good friend’s dad, lol.)

Both Ethan and Ivan are getting really close to getting theirs off though, so that’s awesome. (Maybe by Christmas (for Ethan), I think they said?)

I sort of eventually want to get braces again too because I didn’t wear my retainer enough and my bottom teeth are all screwed up again now. 😩 Maybe eventually. Don’t love the idea of it, really…. wonder if those Invisalign ones would be an option??

  • Driver’s Ed

Asher’s been doing the online driver’s ed courses and takes the written Temps (permit) test on Sunday!

Due to the dates, it didn’t work for him to do the hybrid class option that Ethan did, so he’s done it all online. I did like the hybrid class because they did cool stuff like have the kids wear “beer goggles” to see what it would look like driving drunk, etc. Just more interactive and I think those types of activities are impactful.

But, the lady said he could go to the final in-person class on Sunday at least, which is when they take the written temps test. Then when he turns 15 in a few weeks on Dec 2nd…. we can just pop over to the DMV to pick up his permit.

Honestly not really looking forward to embarking on teaching another kid to drive already. (I mean, yes, it’s exciting, but also kind of anxiety-provoking in moments. It’s obviously easier for me to just hop in the car and drive myself versus being in “instructor mode” any time we go somewhere…).

But HE is excited, so, we’re all excited. 😉

Daily Gratitude:

I am grateful for my mom being here for a couple days!

  1. A friend of mine has Invisalign and he loves them but they are not cheap! I don’t know how much braces cost or whether or not your insurance covers part of it, but I think for Invisalign, they are not covered by insurance. However, you can’t even tell he is wearing them, so they are much better looking cosmetically!

  2. You really are funding your orthodontist’s lake house! I feel lucky that although both my kids had braces, it wasn’t at the same time.

The rest of your money will obviously be going to pay for car insurance, ha. Two teenage drivers! I don’t envy you (although- it is exciting, and good luck to Asher!)

  3. We have one in braces, but I am SO worried they will shift back over time. Gah. You make it sound like you had braces before and then didn’t keep up with your retainer?

I’m VERY much hoping our son doesn’t end up needing braces. To be fair, I feel like perfect teeth for a boy isn’t nearly as important as teeth for a woman. It’s sad that appearance dichotomy exists, but I really worried because of her dental issues my daughter would have an unnecessary struggle with things like job interviews etc (she really needed to have braces too, it isn’t just an aesthetic choice, but I’m very happy for her that she’ll end up with straight teeth).

We don’t have private dental coverage so braces are completely OOP for us. It’s NOT cheap.

  4. My 16 year old has done really well with his Invisalign, so I’ve considered doing it. I also never kept up with any retainers after having braces. We have a new dental plan that may cover some adult ortho, so that would be awesome. However, the sticking point for me is that you have to take them out to eat or drink anything other than water. Then you’re supposed to brush them before putting them in. Would definitely help cut down on all the random snacking I do throughout the day, but I’m not sure how much of a pain that would be!

  5. I had my Invisalign too in my 30s, life changing together with veneer for my front teeth. Sofia needs braces for sure but waiting to know whether we move or not as it would be inconvenient to stop the treatment midway.
Oh kids driving will freak me out. I’ll need your wisdom when the time comes.

  6. Gosh braces are expensive so I am glad 2 family members are close to being done! I never had braces. My bottom teeth are kind of crowded but people rarely see my bottom teeth so I just ignore it or try to!!

Another driver on the horizon!! Yikes!!

  7. Good luck with the braces… we’re done with two and so glad they keep retainers. Back in my day my orthodontist refused to let me keep mine so I now have an overbite – annoying after wearing a head gear for 2 years of my life. My husband thinks it’s cute, so there’s that.

And good luck with the drivers! Stressful but exciting times for kids and Moms and Dads everywhere!

  8. Big milestones for Asher. if it makes you feel better, my brother in law is a dentist and he said our teeth are always moving through adulthood, so even if you wore that retainer faithfully, your teeth may still have moved (my bottom teeth have also moved and are slightly crooked after braces as a teenager). But I figure no one sees my bottom teeth so I don’t care- ha!
