Friday food and fashion

Food:

We had a pretty solid (for us) week of meals! More planned out/ legit meals than some weeks…😄

We had:

  • shrimp tacos, mexican rice, black beans
  • ate out one night w/ Ivan’s mom…
  • air fryer chicken w/ leftover rice/beans (or in my case, I made it into a salad)
  • cream of potato and bacon soup, salad, delicious 4 cheese bread that Ivan picked up on his way home from work
my air fryer chicken, thrown in during my work day!
My chicken salad, topped with leftover pico de gallo/ salsa from shrimp taco night
Not exactly a summer meal, but was in the mood for this.

I am also doing a new challenge! As part of our yearly incentive plan through our health insurance (to get $150 Visa gift card), we have to do a “wellness activity”. I chose the “Five to Thrive” challenge, where you have to ensure you eat at least 5 fruits or veggies a day for 28 days (and record it on the website).

Seemed simple enough.. and not to mention, this is something I should be doing anyway. I’m sad to admit though that I have NOT been always eating 5 fruits and veggies every day recently.

I’ve been jotting them down on this handy “days of the week” sticky note pad.

Challenge started Wednesday 8/28

I don’t have an abundance of variety in my fridge right now, but I have enough to work with. I think this weekend I’ll try to pick up some new options!

Oh, and I was a little disappointed when I logged in this morning to record my fruits/veggies and I found that literally all it asks you to do is type in the total # of servings you ate!! That’s weak. haha. I mean… a less honest person could just type in 5s across the board and be done. But I will not do that!

Speaking of tracking things, I also have been snapping pics of my outfits this week! I mentioned in a recent post that I was inspired by the Unfancy blog as she tracked her capsule wardrobe picks.

I haven’t made a capsule wardrobe, but I’ve just been trying to be slightly more mindful of what I’m wearing this week, just for fun (and to use more of my clothes…). I feel like I was in a rut this past month just wearing the SAME shorts and couple things all the time.

Here’s last Friday- Thursday (minus Sunday when I was in grungy house cleaning clothes all day and I don’t think I took a pic).

Look at me, being consistent!! ha. It’s been kinda fun! I like looking at the album view where I can see all the outfits together. I think it could actually be valuable over a whole month! Maybe I’ll continue. (Is this a fun blog series, or a weird/annoying one?? 🤔 I mean, it works for fashion influencers, but that’s definitely not me.)

Happy long weekend to anyone in the U.S.!!

Will leave you with two random things:

1) Another excerpt from James Clear’s weekly newsletter. I’m really feeling this concept of “lightness” and have found myself mulling that over since I read it.

2) Charlie, because he’s cute. 🥰

Daily Gratitude:

I am grateful for all the “college move in” pics I’ve been seeing this week from friends + their kids. It’s another one of those situations where I’m observing from a distance. It’s not my turn yet, but will be sooner than later. I’m loving seeing pictures of happy kids off at different universities, seeing their proud dorm room pics, and hearing all about it. It’s such an exciting yet emotional time! Shout out also to blog readers Kara and Kaethe that both have new Badgers this week (woot woot, On Wisconsin!) and have been in touch with me/sent pictures! Made my week to hear from you guys. 🙂

    1. I love the red top too! It was a fabulous TJMaxx find. 😉

Love that cheat sheet! I actually have quite a lot of those items (though not all). I’m so intrigued by making a true capsule wardrobe but haven’t really had time to actually try it. I feel like it would be a little undertaking to sort through everything and decide, but could be really fun and worth it in the long run.

I’m so spoiled bc I never do laundry… Ivan has always done everyone’s, but in the last year-ish he transitioned the boys to doing their own. They often coordinate and will put theirs together and then alternate turns. And Ivan still does ours. 🙂 (I do plenty of other things, don’t worry. LOL. I think he’s still getting the better deal here. ;))

  1. I love that red/orange tank! Great color on you! I feel like I need a little shopping trip on my next shouldless day! I feel like I wear the same things over and over. I did get 2 compliments on the dress I wore the day we had the BOBW zoom, though.

Nice work on meal planning and eating fruits and veggies! It is hard to get 5 servings unless you are super intentional. It’s easiest when I have a salad for lunch but after years of eating salads for lunch I am so burned out on them and the only one I enjoy now is a taco salad! I kind of dread eating anything else I pack. So I have shifted to eating the curry chickpea salad for lunches that other bloggers have mentioned. It’s not veggie heavy but a good source of protein and other nutrients. And I treat myself to a fancy salad at a place in my building once/week. That salad is soooo good but would be so much work to replicate at home. Sept will be tricky as I am gone 7 nights but 10 work days so I will be eating out so much and won’t have much control over my options…

  2. The red tank is great! I’m a huge fan of “business on the top/party on the bottom” for work – gotta love Zoom.

We have wellness incentives with my new insurance and I love it. There’s nothing as complicated as tracking veggies fortunately. There are rewards for getting health screenings ($25 each for colonoscopy & mammogram woohoo) and something like $2 for every 50k steps up to a max of $60 per year. I’m crushing that one.

I’m so sorry to confirm that high school goes by in the blink of an eye. This is our last year and then everyone will be in college. Sigh.

  3. that’s some solid meals! I”m making tacos for the family for the first time today, even ordered the hard shell taco from a Mexican store. Hope it goes well.

I love your outfit pics. I should do the same, although I often have more than one outfit per day: running, gym, office, back to home, sleep. woo.. that’s quite a lot, right? maybe be fun to document.

  4. Eating five different fruits and veggies a day is a VERY healthy habit! It will give you a healthy gut microbiome. I’m going to try to do it along with you- I can get in a rut where I eat the same things every day.

Your outfits are so cute. If I did a post like this, people would probably scream. I actually wear a uniform to work (black scrub-style top and pants of my choice- I wear yoga pants) so my photos would look the SAME EVERY DAY. But honestly… I kind of like it. I don’t have to think too much.

Omg Charlie. Thanks for the pic, it brightened my morning!!!

  5. I love the health incentives that inspire you to build some healthy habits and earn rewards. Good for you for doing the challenge!
And I enjoyed seeing your weekly outfits – I live in comfy clothes most of the week too. Shorts and tees it is! 🙂
