Another solid week of workouts! Is sharing these recaps here the secret sauce? Wait, am I an obliger and not an upholder as I thought?? 😁😝
I actually had a few hiccups this week; I had to skip Wednesday/ insert my rest day in the middle of the week, and I subbed a home workout in for the gym one day. I also ended up shuffling my cardio all to the end of the week (unplanned). But that’s ok. The key is that stuff is still getting done.
Monday
The kids were both still gone, so I “slept in” a little and basically just worked all day. I did the 15 minute stretch class midday on Zoom.
After work I walked to the gym, which was good since I hadn’t gone out for a real walk that day.
I did Legs Day #1 of the week. Due to my back issues, I am now actively avoiding traditional squats, good mornings and barbell deadlifts. I subbed in goblet squats and did single leg DB deadlifts instead of the heavier barbell deadlifts.
I worked out mostly up on the sprint track. They have some squat racks and dumbbells and benches up there, and it’s way more private than the big, busy weight rooms.

Tuesday
Another sort of slow morning… see, I think I am more productive when the kids are home and I need to be all strategic when I’m going to get things done!
I went out for a 20 minute mid-morning break walk. I have been doing this more and more, and I like that time of day for a quick jaunt.
Ended up pushing my workout to the evening, because I had a chiropractor appt at 4:45. After that I stopped home, thinking I would head straight to the gym. But Ivan was home and wanted to go for a walk. So, I went out with him for a 40 minute walk (bringing walk total to 60 minutes for the day).
This left me with later evening for my workout… and I was feeling super lazy by that point. I ended up compromising and just switching to the Home Workout option in my workout plan app. I had shoulders/ triceps on the docket and those are pretty easy to do at home, anyway.

Wednesday
Wednesday was a tough day, because it was just very full. We had ended up going to a LATE showing of the Barbie movie on Tuesday night (it had been sold out everywhere!) and I went to bed super late. So I slept in on Wednesday.
I also had to squeeze in driving ~30 minutes to meet my parents halfway so they could hand off Ethan to me. (I did this over my lunch hour, extended a bit…). Then, Wednesday evening we had a Back to School/ New Family Welcome Night at Ethan’s new high school. So we had to leave for that by a little after 5.
Anyway, under the circumstances, there was just no logical place to put a workout. So I decided Wednesday would just be my rest day. Done.
*I did do the 15 minute stretch class during the day, but that was about it!
Thursday
I knew I had a very open Thursday evening (Asher still gone, Ethan would be at work, and Ivan gets home late on Thursdays), so I planned to just go to the gym Thursday evening.
I walked for 20 minutes at 9:30:

I just basically worked all day and had a chiro appt at 4:45 again.
After that, I wasn’t in a rush, so I stopped at Target. I was planning to help Ethan clean out and organize his room (especially his closet) this weekend and wanted to search for a few bins or baskets. I spent quite a while browsing the various “home organization” aisles and left with quite a few good options!
Went home, unloaded, ate a quick snack and then walked to the gym.
Sorry, no photos, but it was a good workout:

I took my time- says my workout time was 1:05.22! Lots of unilateral stuff and hip thrusts and walking lunges, etc that had my heart rate up pretty good for a strength workout.
As I was finishing up, I noticed through the window that some friends of mine were playing volleyball on the sand courts. So, after my workout I decided to stop by there and watch the end of their game/ hang out for a bit. Ivan was home and could pick up Ethan from work at 9.
I know they usually get a beer after their game at the court-side bar and chit chat. (I used to play on the league with them but now I just sub occasionally.) It’s still fun to hang out with them sometimes, though. It was a beautiful summer night out there! I just drank my water and talked with them for maybe 45 minutes before walking home in the dark! 🙂
Friday
Friday is still no-gym Friday, and I’m still loving this decision. My Fridays feel much “freer” now.
I did the Friday stretch class at 11:30, and had a chicken + apple + parmesan salad for lunch.

After work I did another Emkfit dance video: a Barbie themed video! Haha. It was fun. 😉
Saturday
Ethan had to work at 7, so I drove him there and spent a while just puttering on my laptop, catching up on some blog posts from the week, email, admin stuff, etc.
We did a bunch of chores around the house which felt good to fit in.
I got my new van washed! I feel highly motivated to keep it nice!!! I think I’m going to set a reminder on my calendar to go through the gas station car wash once a month.

It is MUCH EASIER to just keep something cleaned up versus letting it get super messy or dirty and then attempting to re-set it. I just need to remember this.
Ivan did a deep clean of our kitchen and all the floors.
I also cleaned our bedroom, which needed it!
Ivan played soccer at 12:30 and was gone until 2:30 or so, so I went to the gym during this time. I did back/biceps and then 20 minutes on the stairmill. (I took a selfie on the stairs, which, when I looked back at it post-workout, I deemed was most definitely NOT blog-worthy at all. Yeesh. Not my best look. LOL. Delete! 😂)
When Ethan got home from work, we dove into Operation Get Teenager’s Bedroom Ready For The School Year. (He starts school on Monday!!)
His closet looked like a bomb went off in it, and it was full of so many random things that he does.not.use anymore. Like…. a bin of Mr. Potato Heads. 😝We weeded out a ton of stuff and organized books in bins and just the whole thing.

We still need to clean out his drawers today!
Sunday
Started the morning with some reading on the deck; Ethan joined me:

Heading off soon to fit in my Full Body + Cardio day! I could have gone for a rest day today…. but unfortunately I took that on Wednesday already….
And that’s a wrap for the week. A bit light on walking compared to the last couple of weeks, but still solid.
*I will report back soon with how Ethan’s first couple days of HIGH SCHOOL go!! Eek. He has soccer practice every day after school from 3:45-6, a new student induction ceremony tomorrow night, a very full looking, challenging class schedule(!) and a soccer scrimmage on Saturday already. He seems excited/ slightly apprehensive (“I don’t know where the locker room is!”). I assured him that no one knows where the locker room is. It will be fine!
Daily Gratitude:
I am grateful for getting Ethan’s closet cleaned out!! Still need to do Asher’s, but he doesn’t start school until the 31st.

My best workout was with a friend. We ran around a 4-mile lake 3x a week. It was beautiful. Make sure you wear the appropriate running shoes. I did not and at 70 years my feet paid a bit of a price. Awesome post. Keep enjoying the days of life.

Every time I see Ethan’s room I just…love it! So calming and just a practical, aesthetically pleasing space for a teen boy!
High school – Eek, indeed.
I didn’t work out much this week at all (I volunteered Mon – Thurs, so I did lots of walking and chasing after kids). BUT my kids are in sports camp M-F the next two weeks all morning, so I plan to fit in a walk or run each of those days. Nothing too long, but it will feel good to start moving again. My exercise nosedives over the summer and I just let it be at this point, but I’m itching for more movement and the next two weeks should be a good launchpoint for once we start daily walks to school (though we don’t go back until after Labour Day).

His room looks great! I bet it felt good to go through stuff and get it organized. A new school year is like January! I love the fresh start feeling.
I was really active on my vacation so felt good about that. I started doing the Caroline Girvan epic heat program which is going to take me like 6 months since I only do 2 strength workouts/week. I like my new routine of strength on Monday and Friday and runs on sat and sun.
Good luck with Ethan’s first day of HS!!

Sports practice directly after school sounds awesome so that’s one positive!!!! Hopefully means less driving? Excited to hear how the HS start goes.
My kids’ rooms are still disasters. I’m having a bit of a block about it honestly. Just is overwhelming.

You had a good week! Reading about your leg days… it sounds like you found the perfect solution to the back issue. The things you listed (goblet squats, single leg deadlifts) are all challenging but easier on the back. I’ve
really been focusing on squats and deadlifts, but I need to do more unlateral moves. Sigh. It’s so hard to fit everything in!
My daughter started high school last week- it was definitely an adjustment but going well so far. I hope Ethan’s week is off to a good start!
I’m glad you’re doing the weekly recaps! I find it really helps to hold me accountable. If I don’t feel like doing a run or workout I think about how I’ll feel if I have to report I didn’t do it… so I usually get it done.

You did well…. even if you had to reshuffle some of your workouts. I think the key is to have something on the calendar, even if you end up shuffling stuff around. And you got some nice variety in.
I second Elisabeth: Ethan’s room looks really nice.
