Mother’s Day and back to Today’s 3 Things

I had a very nice Mother’s Day!! It was pretty low key and felt just about right. Unfortunately, the plans with my own mother had to be pushed back to next weekend, but we did get to spend time with my mother-in-law. (She goes back to Mexico in about 2 weeks, so time is running low now!)

Ethan had a soccer game at 1 pm and she came along. The boys both get really excited whenever family (besides me/Ivan) comes to watch their sporting events. I think they must feel like big stars with more “fans” in attendance or something. 🙂 Later in the evening we went to an early dinner at Ivan’s friend’s Mexican restaurant. It was surprisingly not very busy at all! (It’s located more in a campus/downtown area, so I think many people that live around there are students/young professionals and might not have their mothers in town?)

We had the boys’ 10 year old cousin with us overnight on Saturday and he came to eat with us, too. The boys all get along super well and they LOVE spending time with him!

Ivan and the boys got me some really cool new sneakers, handwritten cards and a gift card for a facial + other spa treatment!! (Getting a facial was on my 20 for 2020 list last year and never happened, so now I really have no excuse to not make that happen.)

Today’s 3 Things

I just spent some time jotting down some to-do items for this week. I feel like I’ve slipped back into the bad habit of “assigning myself” tasks for a day, but then….not doing them. My weekly planner spread from last week is full of little arrows/ cross outs from things I didn’t do. I’m okay with this if I just get really busy, but I don’t think that’s the case. It’s more that I just kind of shrugged them off and didn’t do them!

But, they are things I need to do- just maybe not “urgent” exactly. It annoys me though to carry these items along again and again. Might as well just do them and cross them off!

Examples: Need to call about an account my password is locked out of. Fill out summer band form/ write check. Register for summer piano (this is getting on the urgent side!!). Email band teacher about a lesson time change. Etc.

Nothing major, just stuff I need to do!

I think I’m going to try going back to the Today’s 3 Things idea I shared here (ironically, I am noticing that I posted this last year on Mother’s Day! Must be the time of year my wheels start falling off? Haha.)

Basically- just pick THREE things for each day to do, and do them at all costs!!! 🙂


  1. Email band teacher re: lesson time
  2. Call to straighten out the account password
  3. Go to the gym

I am grateful for a lovely Mother’s Day, and I’m grateful to have a wonderful mom PLUS a great mother-in-law in my life.

  1. I’m glad you got to spend time with your MIL and that the boys got to hang with their cousin! Family time feels especially good now after a year of isolation! We didn’t see any family this weekend – Phil was going to take Pablo to his mom’s on Saturday but pushed it off until next week when he is hopefully feeling back to fullish health? But 3 of my girlfriends came over with their kids on Sat morning for coffee, pastries and playtime for the kids. It was so good to see them! We were afraid to do this last year because 1 friend has her kids at a different daycare so we were nervous to get them together and share germs (2 of us have our kids at the same daycare so are in the same “bubble”). I feel very excited for the summer ahead of us as it will include more time with friends!

    I hope the 3 things method works for you! Seems like a really good approach. I give myself VERY little to do these days – like 5 things for the months usually! Ha. Of course other things come up that I do! But our kids are so little that we don’t have much ‘to do’ related to them.


  2. I like the idea of picking 3 things only to do so it doesn’t feel overwhelmed. I used to list all the tasks for a week and add them to the list as they come, and each day depending on other work tasks, I’d pick 3 to cross, so it feels accomplishments but not stressful.
    happy mothers day. mine was kid centered and low key too.
