Holidays, Life

The day before Thanksgiving

Well I’ve really dropped the ball on my NaBloPoMo quest. Unfortunately, I’ll have to admit this is kind of how my personality goes. Once I break the proverbial seal and “screw up” at something, I am way more likely to sort of throw in the towel and be like, “Eh, well, already broke the chain, so, now what’s the point?”

Which is precisely the opposite of what you’re “supposed to do”, according to habit experts. I know I’ve even blogged about this before, how when it comes to exercise, or other healthy habits you’re trying to maintain, it’s not a big deal if you miss a day- the key is to just not KEEP missing days! I can’t remember who said it, but I know there’s a self-help/ habit guru out there whose mantra is “never miss 2 days in a row”.

Well, I guess I should take my own advice, because I broke my streak, and then proceeded to skip a handful of other days, too. (I probably did you all a favor, because at this point on November 27th, I wouldn’t be surprised if all you faithful blog readers are getting a little burned out on keeping up with daily posts from everyone, anyway! lol!)

Today:

  • grocery store run at 6 a.m.- done
  • Asher has double swim practice today; 8:30-10:30 (done) and then swim 4:15-5:15, and lift 5:30-6:30.
  • I’m working today. Had a big 2 hour meeting from 10-12, but now that that’s over, a bunch of people are out this afternoon. I do have a 3:00-4:00 meeting, but otherwise there’s a “holiday vibe” in the air for sure.
  • My parents will be arriving this afternoon at some point!
  • I need the boys to clean bathrooms x2 and their rooms. Someone needs to unload the dishwasher, and our basement rec room needs vacuuming (though I think that one’s going to be me).
  • I’d like to squeeze in a workout yet, if I can!
  • We usually go out for dinner w/ my parents on the night before Thanksgiving. Destination TBD.

I was thinking this morning at the grocery store, I really like Thanksgiving. It’s just such a nice holiday. I feel like it’s generally low- drama (no one arguing about the exact “meaning” behind it; everyone seems to agree that it’s a day for eating yummy food and being with family and good vibes/ gratitude).

It’s also lower stakes- no gifts, no millions of “Thanksgiving activities” to do… Yet there are still fun traditions (for us, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade, cooking and football- the Packers play tomorrow!).

It’s just…. nice. We typically end up watching a Christmas movie or two over these next few days, also.

We do actually both work on Friday, but it should be low key for me at least with lots of people out. (I think that’s why I often don’t want to burn a vacation day on the Friday after Thanksgiving! It’s just usually a nice, quiet day to work, without meetings, etc., and it’s okay if I start a little later that day.)

I’m hoping to do a fair amount of this this weekend:

Snuggling by the fireplace with Charlie

But, I also need to realistically make some bigger dents in the Christmas shopping list! We’ve sorted some ideas, but need to make a little more action happen now.

I’ll leave you with a Gratitude themed calendar prompt today:

Happy Thanksgiving, all!

Daily Gratitude:

I am grateful for the grocery store being nice and quiet this morning. This is at least the 2nd year in a row I’ve done a Wednesday-before-Thanksgiving early morning run, and it works out beautifully.

  1. I am working today but it’s pretty quiet since a lot of people have unplugged for the holiday. But I decided to work today so I could have Friday off. My colleague and I figure out who will cover which days and he is very flexible since he’s 26 and doesn’t have a family/partner yet. Taco is still sick so he’s home with me and Phil went into the office. Hopefully he is well enough to go to my brother’s tomorrow – otherwise Phil will stay home with him.

I love Thanksgiving for the same reasons. It’s also a holiday I always spend with my family since we have an agreement to see my family on Thanksgiving and Phil’s on Christmas. I love all the food, though, and my brother is an amazing cook so the turkey is so so good and I love all the sides and such.

You had a pretty high participation rate for NaBloPoMo so give yourself credit for that! I have never done it, even in my blogging hey days!!

  2. Happy Thanksgiving! I love that you enjoy the holiday so much. It really does have a lot less pressure than some of the other holidays, although I get a little overwhelmed by all the food and family.

Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

  3. The burnout is real. I am thankful to those people who are NOT participating at this point. I mean, I LOVE reading all of the blog posts, but it feels like a lot sometimes trying to read them all. I am way behind.

Regarding exercise, Yeah, I tend to do that, blow it and then blow it off. Just this week I’ve started a new plan for strength videos, and it’s SMTW strength workout (Caroline Girvan) Th – off – Friday strength workout, Saturday rest. Having specific days of rest I think is going to help me. I’m almost a week in, so too soon to tell. But I did NOT want to do it today, and knowing tomorrow was an active rest day (I will do yoga, but probably it will be too busy with Thanksgiving, so I will not go for a walk) really helped.

I love Thanksgiving for all of the same reasons you do. Good message, low stakes.

  4. Happy Thanksgiving!!! I had yesterday off, which was so nice, but I work tomorrow. We did a lot of the cooking yesterday, so today will be nice and relaxed. And- we’re rivals tonight! Dolphins vs. Packers- go ‘phins! ; )

I hope you have a lovely day!

  5. It’s hard to think up 30 posts for a whole month and try to stick to blogging every day. I resorted to book reviews, and taking a very long trip down memory lane and plundering my childhood. Thankfully, people seemed to have enjoyed reading.

Meanwhile, happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!

  6. I will quietly admit that I’m grateful when I check in on a blog and do not see a new post. The posting has been easy for me (I pre-loaded them all) but I haven’t been able to read and comment nearly as much as I would have liked.

Thanksgiving really is the best, isn’t it? Ours was lovely.

  7. Was it James Clear (in Atomic Habits) who said don’t miss two days in a row. I think it’s true, missing one day is NBD (in German we have a saying “einmal ist keinmal” (one time is like no time), but if you miss more than one day, then you’re in trouble.

I hope you had a lovely Thanksgiving!

  8. I am the same way when I “break the chain,” I find it SO HARD to get back into the swing of things and keep going. I feel you!

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays!

  9. Your workout plan sounds great! I really do love the consistency of a plan, although it also frustrates me sometimes when “life” gets in the way of my plans…. I feel like I’m always trying to balance it all. Sometimes if I can’t do my workout exactly when I want to in the day, then I get annoyed and have a hard time rescheduling it (ie I start to just get lazy!)
