I’m happy to report that my bad week has generally settled down. Things have still felt just a little crazy, but at least Charlie is finally doing better!!
Charlie Update:
So, I had mentioned he had chewed up a lamp cord last week, followed by a week of nighttime wakings with loose stools. (I did not think caused by the lamp cord- figured he ate something in the yard. Still not sure what the culprit really was.) Then Wednesday he threw up remnants of the electric cord (a full week later…).
I had called the vet, and they said to just watch him and feed a bland diet of rice and chicken.
So I fed him rice (chicken didn’t sit well the last time I tried giving him chicken…) and he proceeded to then have liquid diarrhea all night. THEN, the next afternoon, he threw this up:

What in the??? It’s like a fabric strap of some sort, but I have NO idea what it is or where he got it or when he ate it. (Also, how, and why, would one eat a 5 inch long strap?)
But it got me very concerned, especially after the electric cord thing and these prolonged symptoms… like, what else is in there?? I was concerned with progression to liquid diarrhea that maybe he was becoming obstructed with something?
Anyway, I called the vet back immediately and we decided to just do an x-ray. Took him right in on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. and the x-ray was mostly fine. (Possibly “something” else in there, but small and no obstruction.) She gave him an anti-nausea injection, plus two other meds to take home.
They seemed to work almost instantly and he has slept through the night again every night since!!! WOOHOO!! Also no further nausea or diarrhea. THANK GOD.
The next morning, feeling better….. (Me, a naughty boy who eats things I shouldn’t?? Nope, not possible….I’m so cute….)

I felt like a new person after a great night’s sleep on Friday.

Workout Update:
My workouts took a major hit this week. Man, I just could not rally and make it happen on 7+ nights of extremely broken sleep. Props to my younger self who dealt with kid wakeups for months (years?) on end, because I just cannot hack that anymore.
My mornings were all screwed up all week due to the sleep issues, so my morning workouts just felt impossible. I was like a zombie come 6 a.m. I kept saying “I’ll go tonight” but then work was also busy (I had SO many meetings this week…) and the vet appointments, etc… By evening I felt like an even more zombie-like zombie and going to the gym then sounded like torture.
I basically just scratched a few days and decided to not worry about it.
Sunday- gym with Ethan; Upper body
Monday- OFF
Tuesday– nice evening walk with Charlie, nothing else
Wednesday- OFF
Thursday- dragged myself out for a early morning 3.21 mile run! Despite poor sleep… it actually felt pretty good. It was a pretty morning, too; see photos from lap 1 around pond, then lap 2 a little bit later:

I also walked Charlie on Thursday morning after my run.
Friday- 6 a.m gym workout with Ethan! He wanted to go early and got himself up by 5:45 to join me. We did Upper Body. Plus short morning walk with C.
Saturday- afternoon Lower Body strength at gym + long walk with Charlie
I’m “off” my planned schedule but whatever. Also very few runs. Oh well. Hoping for a better week this week. And I guess looking back, it could have been worse! Still got a decent amount of activity in, all things considered.
Kid Update:
Yesterday both boys had places to be by ~7 a.m. Ethan had work at 7, and Asher had swim practice down the road at 7:10. So I handled the drop-offs and then went back to McDonald’s (where Ethan was working 🙂 ) with my laptop and sat and had a hot tea and caught up on a little blog reading!

It was very nice and relaxing. (The swim practice is kind of far enough away from home that it almost makes just as much sense to just wait nearby, anyway, vs going home and then back…and McDonald’s is closer.) Ethan would pop out to say hi to me from time to time too, which was nice. 🙂
In the afternoon Asher had his Solo and Ensemble for band. My mom came along to watch his audition and he did a great job!

He got a “1” rating, which is the highest rating he could get in his solo class. He was happy! Considering that he is quitting band after this year (he decided to not continue on in high school…. sad, but he prefers to have space in his schedule for other, different electives….), it was great for him to finish strong at his final Solo and Ensemble. Part of me really wishes he were continuing! I think at the high school level it would be a lot more fun than in middle school. But what do I know… 😏
Family Update:
Last night we (all 4 of us, plus my parents) went to see the movie The Boys in the Boat. My dad and I had both read the book and really loved it (and I bought it for Ethan for Christmas). It was great! A true story, inspiring, etc etc.

Side note… speaking of prices going up, daaaang. Movies have gotten SO expensive!! For the 6 of us, the tickets alone were $68.58. Then we got a “1 large popcorn + 2 large drink” combo which was something like $30. Then Ivan and my Dad each got a beer for like $10 each, so another $20 there. Then we got also got another popcorn refill in our refillable bucket thing which I think was another $5?
Anyway, all in all, for the 6 of us, it came to at least $125 to see a movie with quite minimal snacks. (I mean, we didn’t get candy, the boys didn’t get Icees or nachos or anything…. literally just plain popcorn and a couple drinks that we shared.).
I LOVE the whole movie theater experience- movies really are better on the huge screen!- but come on! That seems like a lot!
Okay, off to the grocery store for some Superbowl Sunday snack shopping. Have a great Sunday!
Daily Gratitude:
I am grateful for Asher having a successful final Solo and Ensemble performance. Way to go out on a strong note! 🙂

I was going to text you today to see if Charlie is feeling better! I am glad he’s back to normal. But jeez what the heck did he eat?? Even though you got off schedule you still did a good amount of workouts! And sometimes our bodies need rest, especially when sleep is so disrupted!!
I spy my blog in that pic! Your morning of reading blogs at McD’s sounds nice!
I haven’t been to a movie theater in years! I think the last movie I saw was like 4-5 years ago! I would like to take Paul to a movie sometime. I think he’d love the whole movie experience. He doesn’t have school on his birthday so I will have to see if there is anything good playing that he would enjoy. But dang it has gotten expensive!!

Sometimes exercise has to slip because I don’t know what else can. I get home, walk the dog, exercise, make and eat dinner, walk the dog, start to get ready for bed. If there’s ANYTHING in the evening (an event, a meeting, a trip to the store), exercise has to go. I honestly have no idea how people do it.
I’m with Lisa. The last movie I went to in movie theaters was definitely pre-COVID. I sort of feel like the entire entertainment category is out of my budget – I can’t really see spending my little discretionary money on movies, concerts, or other events like that. Oh, well. At least I have a dog. LOL. That’s where all my discretionary income goes.
Poor Charlie. He really can’t be trusted – crate training for you, Mr. Charlie!

Finger crossed Charlie gets better now on. Poor sleep takes a toll on our body and mood. You did great in still working out and got a run despite poor sleep. I’d be a mad woman that way.
Movie experience is really great! But I agree that the price is too much when you can comfortably watch at home. I mostly watch in my office now, alone, with blanket and popcorn. Girls go to our mini cinema once a week to experience the movie thing and for free.
It’s great that you can work out with Ethan. How does he design his workout routine? I want to start taking Sofia for some strength training too but not sure where to start.

I like going to the movies but only go 1-2x/year (and usually on cheap day). It is SO expensive. To be fair, I don’t let the kids get snacks there because it is so ridiculous. We have a pretty big TV at home and Disney+ so that is our compromise. My husband LOVES movies and the theatre, though.
I’m so glad Charlie is feeling better. Poor pup and poor you! Exercise really slid for me last year and I felt guilty about it but at the end of the day something has to give and it’s okay for it to be exercise sometimes!

Good times! Doggo has eaten some absolutely disgusting stuff in our yard. I’m really looking forward to getting the “leave it” command down. Right now the only tools that I have are to say “uh oh” or to lure her away with treats. On the plus side a few crate training sessions was all that it took to get her to start sleeping through the night. I agree, when sleep doesn’t happen then the workouts need to go.
I can’t remember the last time I went to the movie theater. I’ve had some serious shock reactions to how much it costs when the four of us go out to eat.

Oh wow… I really hope the eating bad things phase passes quickly for you! Coco never did but I know it’s pretty common.
Glad you’re sleeping through the night again too! That makes a huge difference to life!

Yay for Asher!!! Yes, it’s sad that he’s not continuing band in high school, because it is really fun. BUT. It’s also a bigger time commitment. During marching season there’s a lot of extra rehearsals, and then of course the games. I think it would be hard for him to do band and the sports he’s involved in. It was really important for me that my kids did band, because they don’t do any sports and I wanted them to have a strong group of friends. Your boys already have that.
Oh, Charlie is so cute and innocent! I would imagine things like this happen all the time with dogs??? I mean they just want to chew and it’s hard to watch them 24/7. I’m glad he’s feeling better and I’m glad you’re getting more sleep! You still did fine with your workouts this week- missing a couple days won’t hurt in the long run. And, no matter how crappy I’m feeling, I always feel better after a run. But running is easy for me- lifting weights is hard. I don’t know if I could get myself to the gym in the early morning if I really hadn’t slept well.
Yeah, movies are ridiculously expensive. And last time we went, we somehow got a free popcorn. So then we figured we needed a drink to go with it, and the “small’ drink was like a barrel of soda. It was an interesting experience! It is fun to see movies in the theater, but we don’t do it often.

Hi! I just listened to (and loved!) your episode on Best Laid Plans. I’ve been trying to find my stride for awhile with digital planning and you gave me so many ideas!
I was wondering if you have shared any visuals about your daily digital journal on your blog or elsewhere? I was trying to visualize it and love the idea of digital documentation

Hi! Absolutely! I have been meaning to put something together about my digital journal with a bunch of screenshots- will get that out soon! I’m so glad you liked the episode and found it valuable 🙂 I have written about some of my digital techniques in the past on my blog, but most of them are slightly outdated (not my “exact” current system). Search the “productivity” tab on the homepage though for some ideas if you’re interested! Will try to get updated versions up soon!!

That would be so great to see all the examples! I am a planner who loves the idea of paper but have been moving towards digital so finding your episode has been really helpful! I am also a mom of two boys (almost 9 & 11) and work full time so feel like there’s a lot to manage and I am always looking for a supportive system.

Charlie looks so innocent! I wish you could just ask him what he got into!
I am not surprised the workouts fell by the wayside a little bit. Something has to give when things are crazy. 😉
