Live like you were dying

*

I heard this song the other day on the radio in the car, for the first time in AGES and I cranked it up and shrieked to Asher, my passenger, “Oh my gosh!!! I LOVE this song!!! I haven’t heard this in forever!! Listen to the lyrics.”

I bet many/(most?) people have heard this song before, but just in case not, I really, really wanted to share the lyrics here.

It’s a song by Tim McGraw (i.e. country!), so I suppose it is possible that some anti-country music people have not had the pleasure before! 😉 It’s one of the best, most thought provoking messages in a song of all times, in my opinion. It makes me want to just squeeze every last ounce out of life that I can, while I can.

Even if you’ve heard it before, take a minute and read the lyrics, or watch the video. Enjoy!!

He said,
“I was in my early forties
With a lot of life before me
When a moment came that stopped me on a dime

I spent most of the next days
Looking at the x-rays
And talkin’ ’bout the options
And talkin’ ’bout sweet time”

I asked him,
“When it sank in
That this might really be the real end
How’s it hit you
When you get that kind of news?
Man, what’d you do?”

And he said,
“I went sky-diving
I went Rocky Mountain climbing
I went 2.7 seconds on a bull named Fumanchu
And I loved deeper
And I spoke sweeter
And I gave forgiveness I’d been denying”
And he said
,
“Someday I hope you get the chance
To live like you were dying.”

He said,
“I was finally the husband
That most of the time I wasn’t
And I became a friend a friend would like to have
And all of a sudden going fishin’
Wasn’t such an imposition
And I went three times that year I lost my dad
Well I, I finally read the Good Book, and I
Took a good, long, hard look
At what I’d do if I could do it all again

And then

I went skydiving
I went Rocky Mountain climbing
I went 2.7 seconds on a bull named Fumanchu
And I loved deeper
And I spoke sweeter
And I gave forgiveness I’d been denying”
And he said
,
“Someday I hope you get the chance
To live like you were dying

Like tomorrow was a gift
And you’ve got eternity
To think about
What would you do with it
What could you do with it
What did I do with it?
What would I do with it?

(No commentary needed. The lyrics speak for themselves! What a great perspective. ❤❤❤❤)

If you’d never heard this song before, let me know! I’m just curious.

*Also, are you yay or nay on the idea of sky diving? Anyone ever done it? If so, PLEASE COMMENT!! I need to know. I’m a big fat NAY, despite loving the idea of it in this song. 😆 I kind of can’t think of anything more terrifying sounding.

What are 3 Things you love most about yourself?

1- My sense of humor!

2- I like being pretty tall!

3- Being a determined, hard working, “gritty” person (generally speaking 🤪)!

  1. Those lyrics are…spot on.
I’m not a country music fan, but music/poetry can capture the essence of life like nothing else can.
My husband REALLY wants to go skydiving and…I think I would too? I can’t quite decide. It would definitely feel like “choosing the bigger life” which is appealing to me. But also. Jumping out of a plane and hurtling to the ground feels rather irresponsible for a mother-of-two. So, probably not, but I’ll never say never – haha.

      1. Yep! I did it years ago… before A was born. A friend mentioned she was doing one and I was at that young age where I just offered to join her LOL. It was very cool!

  2. Oh I could have sang this song along with you if we were in the car together! I used to love country when I was younger. Now I rarely listen to music, except albums from my favorite artists, and I never listen to country! This is a great song with a great message!

I have not gone skydiving, but Phil has and he loved it. I did go bungy jumping when I was traveling in New Zealand while studying abroad. I am a huge chicken so it was terrifying for me, but I am so glad I did it!

I’m so often thinking about things I want to change/am not happy with so I will play along w/ the 3 things I like about myself and say: 1) I’m really good at staying connected with friends. I’m usually the one reaching out to schedule a coffee catch up or a zoom, etc. I joke that my husband should let me manage this aspect of his life. He will often comment on how I see the wives of his friends (who I met through Phil) more than he sees his friends! 2) I’m very disciplined and driven. 3) I’m a good mom. Phil reminds me of this quite a bit. I know my boys’ love me and while this stage of life has been super challenging (Will is home with another fever again! Obviously not his ears now that he has tubes so some other virus), but I know in the long run this is a role I was meant to fill. I am really starting to enjoy Paul’s stage more and more. He loves to play games and put puzzles together after Will is in bed. And I am here for that as I love board games and puzzles so much!
