The other day I received this great little story in 5 am Joel’s daily email*:
There are these two young fish swimming along and they happen to meet an older fish swimming the other way, who nods at them and says, “Morning, boys. How’s the water?”
And the two young fish swim on for a bit, and then eventually one of them looks over at the other and goes, “What the hell is water?”
Joel went on to interpret it, saying that too often we “swim” through life from one event to the next, not really noticing that THIS IS LIFE. We are literally surrounded by it at all times.
He gives an example of a day mostly revolving around going to an afternoon BBQ. You might think that everything else in the day is sort of “secondary”. The main thing is getting ready for the BBQ, and then that is what you’ll really do that day.
But all the other small moments leading up to that count, too. Maybe they count even more! If we forget to enjoy all those countless, seemingly “insignificant” moments, we miss out on major chunks of actual LIFE.
I loved this little story. It inspired me to really make sure to look around and pay attention more to the simple pleasures everywhere. The more you seek, the more you find!
P.S. My little social media hiatus has been a serious breath of fresh air, too. I no longer find myself staring at my phone nearly as often. More on this to come. I’d rather look UP and see stuff like this cool cloud I saw last night:

*I got the “This is Water” story from 5 am Joel’s email list, but I think he got it from this blog post, who got it from David Wallace’s commencement speech! I’m just passing it along. 😊
Daily Gratitude:
I am grateful for a telehealth check-up visit yesterday for one of the boys, which saved me ~2 hours out of my day (since I didn’t have to drive to the far side of town and back)!
Yay for telehealth visits. They are a good replacement for many of the doctor appts I have. I was especially grateful during my pregnancy to shift my endo and rheum appts to eVisits since I had so many OB appts!
That water story is really thought provoking! I will have to try that out, although maybe in a later stage of life. 😉 Right now we are in such an exhausting stage so I try to focus on the fun, positive things, like a family bbq, to distract me from the other stuff like tantrums and sleep deprivation. 😉
PS super annoying that the comment you typed on your phone got deleted! That happens to be occasionally when I comment using my blog and it is so frustrating!!
