Copenhagen Day 8 + Travel Home: Photo Dump

Last day!! 😭

Request for late check out granted- extended to 12:30, yay! Pack up, clean up:

10 am- head out for a final walk around the city + breakfast:

Back to Nyhavn… wanted a pic of all 4 of us. (Without my parents along to be our photographers, I got like, NO pics of all 4 of us!!!)

Meh, don’t really like this one though. Sun went under, windy, just not my fav. Oh well.
Sun’s out… and… Ethan blinked. 😆

Iván bought a Hygge shirt!!

Last time on the trampolines…

Love the flag on the sleeve 🙂

Breakfast:

Final wander down the Strøget 😥:

Time to go!! Checked out right at 12:30:

Decide those two little fried eggs and mini-sized Rye bread pieces were not sufficient… order some Nutella churros from the place across the street. 😅:

Now we’re talking

Boys watch bags while Iván and I ran in to see inside of the City Hall. We walked past it 100 times but hadn’t been inside yet! Multiple civil ceremony weddings were happening! 💗

Buy train tickets on my phone, wait for train:

Basically the end! All smooth sailing on our flights. Back to Iceland, then to Chicago.

Flying into Iceland
Flying into Chicago at 9:15 pm

Pulled into our driveway at 12:30 a.m! In total from train station in Copenhagen to our driveway = 18 hour journey. 😴

Love to travel but the actual traveling part… no. It kinda ruins the “trip high”!! Someone needs to figure out how to teleport me from happily eating a churro in the plaza to suddenly waking up contentedly in my own bed, ideally with my suitcase already unpacked and laundry going. lol.

Unpacked my new bookmarks this morning 🤗:

P.S. Did I ever show you my London ones? Can’t remember:

Today: reunited with my furry baby!!! He seems… wiped out. And maybe a little mad at me?! Just seems quiet, sleepy, and not quite himself. 😥 They said he did great though… I’m sure he’ll snap out of it after a day or two of heavy naps!

THE END!

*I have now thoroughly confused myself as to how to proceed with posting. LOL. My idea of just dumping some pics and then full recapping later seemed good, and it was fun to post the pics, but… of course, being me, I didn’t totally limit it to pics, so you already got some text… but I feel like I still have many more specific things to say/recap/remember/document?! Yet I am sure no one wants a million more Copenhagen posts at this point… ARGH. I probably should have just waited and done regular recaps after the fact like most bloggers do!!! 🤪 (Everything was so amazing that I was just so eager to share with you guys, though! I couldn’t help it.)

To be determined! At the very least, I know you are all waiting for ALL the details about the luggage. 😅😅😅

  1. We are going to Copenhagen tomorrow! I would love to hear more details on what worked and what didn’t, restaurants that you loved and any other suggestions! Were the two trips out of town worth it? Is there anything you would change? I know it’s the end of the week so no rush to respond!

    1. Oh yay, exciting!!! I would say it depends on how much time you have! Since we had a full week, we both agreed it worked out very well to do some day trips. It added some nice, rich variety to our experiences, we thought! Our day trips were: Roskilde, Mons Klint/Forest Tower (car rental) and then we spent most of the day in Sweden (Lund/ Malmo) on our final day. I think if I were forced to rank them, I would say: #1 Mons Klint #2 Roskilde/ the cathedral/Viking museum and #3 Sweden. (The towns in Sweden were SO picturesque, but since we mostly just walked around, the boys were a little “meh” on that. My husband said he wouldn’t cut any of them and liked them all in different ways! We both thought the Viking Ship Museum could maybe have been a little better, but overall that day (wandering around very cute Roskilde, lunch at Hygge Cafe, checking out the museum, then visiting the very interesting/ beautiful cathedral and then drinks in the town square) was a really great one when all put together! Mons Klint was AMAZING and I loved the entire day. See my other post for the places we all stopped. It was great.)

In terms of restaurants… I am not that much help there! I honestly don’t even know the names of most of the places we ate! We are usually more of the “walk around and find somewhere” variety of tourists. Just know that food/drinks are EXPENSIVE, everywhere. Like a typical basic entree usually started at $22+, even for lunch. Drinks were always over $10/ piece and you usually have to pay for even tap water, and we got charged most places for using a foreign credit card (3.5%) (from the restaurant, not our credit card companies- we have World cards that don’t charge intnl fees!) If you’re near the Old English Pub and like a cozy pub scene, they have live music after night after 10 and we adored that cute place.

I don’t think I would change a thing to our itinerary! I was super happy with how it all worked out. We opted to not do as many museums/palaces (really just did Rosenborg Palace and only walked by Amalienborg, didn’t do others) because the boys not as into that stuff.

Things we LOVED the most: by far, the GO boats! The boys LOVED this. Our whole 1st main day was a fav: Old Library, Round Tower, then GO Boats, Christiana and Our Saviour Church. Obviously walking around Nyhavn/ Stroget. Other must dos for our crew included Tivioli, of course, and we all had fun with the bike rental + ride to Assistens Cemetery. Rosenborg Palace was beautiful and unique and different from other palaces I’ve seen- would say a must do! Then all 3 of our day trips I’d add to my “favorites” list, also. Oh, and the Amalienborg Palace plaza.

Things we did that were nice but not a must for me: seeing the Little Mermaid (really not that exciting!), walking through Kastellen (also enjoyed, but not a “must”), the Happiness Museum (cute/fun but at $20/person, a bit steep. I’m into that sort of thing though, so just Asher and I went in).

Things we didn’t get to but would have liked to: Carlsberg Brewery Tour, Reffen Food Market, the open air museum (Frilandmuseet), Bakken amusement park/ deer park and then day trip to Hillerod/ Frederiksburg Castle. We had to choose and chose Roskilde bc the boys not that into touring old castles.

One other thing: The public transport was a bit more confusing than I anticipated! There are so many different apps, etc and it’s just confusing at first. We only used the metro once! From airport to our apartment. Then we just walked everywhere. I downloaded the DSB app and used that for buying metro tickets from airport to Radhuspladsen stop, train tickets to Roskilde + train back to the airport too. To go to Sweden, the Skanetrafiken app is supposed to be very easy, but I could NOT download it (or some other transport apps) while there because you must have phone data to receive the code by text. We only had an e-sim (which is not sufficient! It’s an SMS code). So if you are planning Sweden, and are still in the U.S., download all the apps before you go! (You can still buy tickets at the station from machine, but it would have been much easier and/or cheaper to see schedules and buy on the app.)

Let me know if you have any other questions! Would love to hear about your time! We LOVED it!! I had no idea really what to expect and Copenhagen exceeded any and all expectations! It’s amazing.

      1. Oh, and one other thing- we ended up NOT getting the Copenhagen Card. Not sure if you’re traveling with kids or not, but we realized that a majority of the places we wanted to go actually don’t charge for kids 0-17, so it would have been a waste! If we’d had the card maybe we would have used the metro a few times, but overall, it’s very walkable, anyway. We didn’t regret not getting the card, based on our itinerary and plans.

  2. It looks like you had an amazing trip! Copenhagen looks like such a charming city to visit. I am glad it all went smoothly. But the return flight from a big vacation is not fun, especially when you are dealing with a big time change! Good luck adjusting back to CST!!

  3. Your trip recaps are always fun and engaging! I definitely wouldn’t mind whatever further details you feel like sharing. I agree, it feels like you already did “mini recaps.” But I’m sure there’s lots more to say!

Ha, Charlie- all tired out from HIS vacation. And off- 18 hours is a long travel day. I’m imagining you guys will have major jet lag for a few days.

    I love those bookmarks!

  5. That is such a long travel day back home! One of the reasons I love cruising is that I’m within driving distance of so many cruise ports so I’m usually back home by lunchtime on the last day – hearing about the long travel days of people who have to fly home makes me grateful I’m not getting home LATE like they do!

I am here for more blog posts about your trip!

  6. So, fun fact. In Denmark you have to have a civil ceremony for the marriage to be legally recognized. A church ceremony doesn’t “count” as the official marriage. So A LOT of people get married at city hall. My brother and SIL got married at that city hall (years ago…not when you were visiting), and then had a “normal” ceremony at a church with family and friends a few weeks later.
