First couple days of family cruise!

Hello! It’s been an exciting few days. I’m writing from aboard a cruise ship, currently looking out at the ocean and not much else. 🙂

I mentioned previously this trip is a big combo family trip with my parents, sister’s family and us, in honor of my parents’ 50th WEDDING ANNIVERSARY!! (Which was last September, but this was the first time we could all get together for this.)

Leaving home- Friday: Milwaukee —> Fort Lauderdale

Airport parking!

My little nieces and nephew got invited to check out the cockpit, so Asher jumped in there too. They let him set the parking break. 🙂

After a little flight delay, a layover in Detroit and another flight, we made it to Fort Lauderdale with no real issues. Oh, minus a little “medical emergency” where a woman basically passed out and fell on her way to the bathroom, right next to my seat. I had to scoop her up and put her in a seat, and she was totally out of it- at first look appeared to be a seizure?? Also of course thought maybe she had a low blood sugar, but she was semi-responsive and was able to tell me no to any diabetes history… anyway, long story short and a lot of commotion later, it turns out she took an, um, edible before the flight. Ha. Mystery solved. She was basically looped out of her mind. Fortunately by the end of the flight she was better.

But, the airline gave me a $100 flight credit for my “medical assistance” during the event! So that was cool. (This is actually the third time I have had to assist with a medical emergency as a nurse during a flight!!)

Anyway!

We didn’t get in until early evening and by the time we got settled plus a one hour time change, we didn’t have time for too much. Also, my sister’s kids are 4, 6 and 8, so not quite the party animals (lol) that my boys are (yet ;)).

Pretty Florida hotel grounds:

After dinner everyone else turned in, but Ivan and I and the boys went to the pool and hot tub… at 8:55, only to find out it closed at 9. Hmph. I begged the security guy to give us “just 5 more minutes” so it was at least worth that I got one of my suits wet…

Hotel breakfast buffet in the morning (Embassy Suites) and then some pool time!

The boys had fun swimming with their cousins and the pool was delightfully empty.

I sat in the hot tub for a little bit, which probably sounds crazy to any Floridians… but it was overcast and I had been chilled by the air conditioning during breakfast! Ha.

Then, I showered and packed up and walked up the block to Starbucks to meet up with…. Sarah!!!! Aka, SHU!!

This was a huge thrill and highlight for me!! I’ve been a longtime fan of her blog and podcasts, and I’m happy to now consider her an actual friend, too. 🙂

I’m so glad we were able to meet! She was as amazing as I knew she’d be, and I was equally thrilled to meet little Genevieve (what a hoot she is!) and the very sweet, mature Annabel. TOTALLY would hang out with Sarah anytime if we lived closer!! It was so so nice of her to drive a ways to meet me, too. Oh, and of course she had a little “planner package” with some goodies waiting for me which was so sweet!

Hotel —> Ship! (Saturday)

By 11:30 we were on the shuttle to the port, and before long on the ship! Woohoo. This is everyone’s first cruise except mine- I have been on a bunch, but mostly with a friend’s family from high school as a teen (5 times!), plus one with college friends ~ 20 years ago.

Ready to board:

Exploring the ship:

Our room… cozy, but love the balcony!
Checking out the pretty dining room.

Ivan getting the party started:

Asher trying the Flow Rider surfing/boogie board thing:

Still docked in the port! We took the earliest check in time we could and were on board by noon. Gotta maximize our time!

Oh, and check out the nice gym! Empty on first day, but PACKED to the hilt this morning when I tried to go…

We did sail away at 4:30 from the helicopter pad:

Bye Florida! See you next week.
The weather held. It looked a bit ominous with storm clouds etc but we made it out before a few sprinkles fell. Fortunately no big storm. It did rain heavier at night for a while, but after 11 pm.

The boys hit up the “sport court” for some pick up basketball:

We also toured the kids club with my sister and got the boys signed up for the Teen Club. (Though they are not really partaking in all it has to offer… maybe if they were here with friends, but they seem hesitant to just jump in there. They love being independent and have been doing things ALL over the ship, but don’t seem to want to do all the organized “teen activities” really…I feel a little disappointed because I think they would have fun!! But, maybe it’s just their ages, a boy thing, their personalities… who knows.)

First dinner!

Asher eating escargot! He loved it.
The special couple ❤️

We have the early dinner (5:30 p.m.).

Silent Party!

After dinner the two littlest kids went to the kids club for a bit and the rest of us went with my 8 year old niece to a Family Silent Party in the disco. They gave everyone headphones and you could alternate between two different songs at any time. Everyone was dancing – but the music was only via headphones! And people were listening to different songs. It looked…. ridiculous, if you took your headphones off. Hahahaha. (All these people dancing in a silent room!)

She LOVED THIS!!! She was a dancing MACHINE!! Haha!
Not big dancers but they were good sports!
I’m not a good dancer either but a little liquid courage never hurts. 🙂

After this my sister and niece headed to bed, and my parents, Ivan and I went to the 9:30 show. It was a Variety Show with music, dancing and a GREAT comedian!

After that, my parents headed to bed but I wanted to check out the “90’s Music Hour” in the nightclub!! It was pretty good. I was getting tired and didn’t really want any more to drink, so we mostly just sat and listened for a while. We were in bed by about midnight.

Traveling with a bigger group, with mixed ages, and a very different travel method (cruising is… unique! Lots of people, kind of overwhelming in some ways.) means it can be slightly complicated sometimes. The Royal Caribbean app (and built in chat feature) has been a lifesaver for finding each other on the ship and checking in with what people want to do, etc. (No cell service at sea.)

Okay, time for bed! More later! We had a sea day today (will post about that tomorrow hopefully). We are in Honduras tomorrow all day though, so we’ll see!

  1. Wow Kae! It’s so great to follow along with you on this trip – thanks so much for sharing!

How exciting that you get to do this big trip with your wider family, so special!

  2. That is cool that you got to meet SHU! I have written about this before but I do believe the connections that are made between bloggers can really be something special and it is always fun to put the real body and face to the countless words that we have exchanged over the internet with someone!

I will need to pick your brain at some point because my parents are also having their 50th soon and we were considering an Alaska cruise, but I really don’t know if we would like it. We like to get out where there are no people and I wonder if the amount of time spent with others would get old fast. Do you ever have “alone” time? Do you feel like you are constantly waiting for the next activity or event? Is there always a line/a lot of people at each thing? Enjoy the rest of your trip!

    1. Welllllll, it’s a very different style of travel. I think it depends. There are fun things about it for sure!! But if you’ve done a lot of solo/ independent travel (as we have), this is very very different. I think it’s a mind frame thing. In this case, we are traveling with the intent of just having fun with the family, experiencing something new, etc. If my goal were to really see our ports of call in depth, well, no. Also, there are a lot of people, there are lines…. I don’t love all of that but again, my mindset right now is just that that’s part of it and it’s fine. If I were here alone with Ivan, there are certainly ways to avoid some crowds and get alone space. Harder with kids and families along. I enjoy the evening entertainment, the dinners are very nice and all included! I think for us it’s something very fun and different ro do now but I don’t see it ever being our main form of travel or anything. Hope that helps! Happy to answer more questions. 🙂

      1. If no one has ever cruised, like with our group, it could be fun to try it for a new-to-all experience! We also picked this option because there are lots of different things to do for all age groups, and it’s simpler to plan since it’s all included and you can just pick from the list of excursions, etc.

  3. I’m so envious that you and SHU got to meet. I’d love to meet both of you. You and I live pretty close to each other so we should plan a meet-up at some point! We could meet half-way even, whatever that would be? Eau Claire? I need to look at a map… Or maybe my work travels will bring me to Madison at some point.

I’ve never been on a cruise and haven’t been drawn to go on one but it would be nice to see different places! My parents went on one when I was in elementary school and they did not like the hustle/bustle feeling. But I know people who LOVE cruising so it just depends on your personality. I hope your nieces like the kids club. I imagine your boys will entertain them as well!

  4. Happy anniversary to your mom and dad! God bless!
I also appreciate the details of what it’s like to be on a cruise. I have a fear of being surrounded by that amount of water and not being on dry land so I highly doubt I will ever partake in a cruise… Very much look forward to reading more updates! A unique and wonderful opportunity!

  5. so cool that you got to meet with Sarah!!!! And cruise seems to be a great way to travel with the big family. I’m eager to hear what you like and dislike about the cruise experience. I’m still skeptical about it.

  6. So cool you got to meet up with Sarah. I love taking URL friendships to IRL friendships.

And wow, that cruise ship, esp. that awesome gym! LOL I haven’t been on a cruise ship, I don’t think it would be my thing, but it still looks amazing nonetheless. I am so happy you all get to do this together.

  7. So many fun things here.
First, I love your outfits! You look gorgeous (as always).
What a fun family vacation and so fun that the boys can wander freely now. We’re getting closer and closer to that point with our kids and it is liberating to not have to be tied quite as closely (and not having early bedtimes and naps really is life-changing in terms of flexibility).

And how fun you got to meet up with SHU!

  8. I love this so much because I have NEVER been on a cruise! When my husband was younger he worked on cruise ships, so it doesn’t sound like a fun vacation to him. But I think I would love it! One of these days he’s coming with me on a cruise, or I’ll go by myself (ha ha- I think he’ll opt to come along.) I can’t wait for the next installment…
