A relaxed day

Yesterday (the 26th) was a really chill day!! Which was fine by me. After all of the busy holiday stuff at home, packing, travel, early mornings, late nights, Christmas….it was nice to have our first full day in Toluca be a relaxing one.

Everyone kind of slept in/lounged around much of the morning. It’s just the 4 of us and his parents at their house now.

We had tea/coffee and bread first thing and visited.

Ivan and the boys played a few rounds of FIFA (soccer) on the video games.

The boys always like to go up on the roof and just look out:

The volcano was covered in clouds but usually is neat to look at.

The boys made several trips to the corner store to spend some of their pesos on candy. They love doing this here!

I hung around in the living room and read some blogs/uploaded photos while they were playing FIFA.

Side note- Ethan says he “hates” my nails. Says they look “weird” and that he is not used to seeing me with my nails done like this, and he doesn’t like the dark color and keeps telling me to take them off. 🤷‍♀️ They are kind of a burnt reddish brown color. I picked them because of the options at Walgreens the day before we traveled, these were the most “wintery” or “holiday-ish”. (I usually would opt for probably a neutral; it’s true that I’m not really the “dark nails type”, but are they so awful??)

My usual go to manicure- ImPress press on nails, $8 at Walgreens!

Ivan’s mom made huevos con salchicha for “brunch” served with fresh corn tortillas (the boys went with his parents down the street to pick up). Plus spicy salsa of course.

I spent quite a while just lounging on my bed reading my Dogs of Christmas book while people showered, etc. Again, just a really laid back day.

Later in the afternoon Ivan’s (very pregnant and due next week) sister and her other 2 daughters stopped by to visit. We sat and chatted with them for a couple hours.

By 5 we left to stop to see an old friend of Ivan’s briefly on our way out to the mall to see a movie.

The mall was packed! And very festive.

We saw Aquaman 2 (the new DC movie). Very fun! We all liked it. Lots of constant action. We got popcorn and nachos and the whole nine yards.

We took a few pics in front of their great holiday display. On the way in it was funny to see that instead of a “Pictures with Santa” display, kids were lining up to take pictures with the “Three Wise Men”! Here on January 6th they celebrate el Día de Los Reyes, or Three Kings Day, and they receive gifts on that morning.

They had a huge, beautiful Christmas tree (and- Sears is still kicking here! That’s been long gone back home- closed years ago now).

We picked up some al pastor taco meat from a vendor on the way home and had some late night tacos since we didn’t really have dinner (besides the popcorn). Complete with pineapple, salsa, onion and cilantro and fresh tiny corn tortillas. Delicioso.

Ate and talked a while and then somehow it was almost midnight before we headed up to bed! It was a really nice day. 🙂

My only complaint… the weather!!!! It was fantastic in Mexico City but it is absolutely freezing here. The house is soooooo cold that I literally cannot stand it! I did not pack enough really warm clothes for day to day wear. My hands are like ice cubes and I swear sometimes I can see my breath. 😩 No matter what I do I can’t get warm and I literally sat at the kitchen table with a big blanket wrapped around me!! lol!!

We are headed back to Mexico City today so I’m hoping it will be a bit warmer again there!!

  1. Yay, you got your lazy day (wasn’t that your only complaint about spending Christmas in Mexico- you would miss that lazy time after Christmas?)
I love your nails! Don’t listen to Ethan.
Oh, Sears… I miss it! Funny to see one again. That mall looks nice. Overall it sounds like a really nice day, and if it’s not warmer in Mexico City I think you should buy yourself some warm clothes!

  2. I love your nails! Ethan doesn’t know what he’s talking about! I love that dark, rich color. It’s perfect for winter/the holidays!

Burr, that sounds really cold. It’s hard to sit around and have a cozy day if you are FREEZING! I hope it’s warmer in Mexico City! I bet it was nice to sit in a warm, cozy theater during the movie!

  3. Ha on the nails! I try to always paint my nails in absolutely unnatural colors – green, purple, blue – because otherwise I would just skip polish and be neutral. My husband has no reaction to my nails at this point.

I HATE when I underpack and am cold. I have a very vivid memory of spending a long weekend in San Francisco freezing because I thought it would be warm! Fingers crossed it’s warmer in Mexico City!

  4. Your nails are fab. Sorry Ethan, but you’re just wrong.

I love everything except the cold. There’s nothing worse than not being able to get warm.

  5. Lol on the nails- I remember getting really upset any time my mom changed her haircut or got a new purse. I think seeing your mom look unfamiliar can be disorienting!

  6. I love your nails and love them so much I went to see if I could get them on Amazon in Canada (I can!; we don’t have Walgreens here). I think they look amazing on you and I love the dark colour. Do you find they damage your nails underneath? How long do they last? Are they hard to remove? I’m thinking about buying a set (maybe in a light pink?) before our trip. I hate wearing polish when we travel because it inevitably chips on me 😦
So many questions – maybe just text me the answers?!

Being cold is my biggest nightmare. So far, I’ve been a lot warmer this winter, but I know the true cold/snowy weather is still to come…

  7. Ethan’s reaction to your nails is such teenager behavior – I think they look fabulous!

Ugh, and I hate being cold. I would be absolutely miserable. It’s not THAT cold here right now but I live for my space heater that I carry around the house with me (because Jon’s always warm).
