Day 4: Roatan, Honduras

Ohhhh as expected, I’ve already fallen so far behind on posting! The combination of obviously just being very preoccupied and also spotty internet has meant… radio silence. 🙂

The problem is that we have done so many different things and have had such full days that the details are probably getting a bit fuzzy/intertwined/mixed up! 😉

Monday, June 26: Port of Call = Roatan, Honduras

We got into Honduras in the morning and didn’t have an excursion scheduled until 10:30. This was nice, because we had time for a little more leisurely morning.

Awake and not quite yet to Honduras. Still on the open sea.

We got breakfast in the huge buffet breakfast again:

It started to rain a little just as we were approaching Roatan, and we got a rainbow.

Approaching land:

Sad to have overcast skies and a few raindrops! But it was still pretty, and the rain was brief.

We had some time to kill after breakfast, so Ivan and I and Asher went in one of the hot tubs. One perk on the excursion days is that the pools and hot tubs are empty, if you stay on the ship instead!

Off the boat in Roatan, heading to our excursion!

We had booked a trip to the Guambalimba Preservation Park. With the cruise ship excursions, there are TONS of options, but we were a bit limited by the varying ages in our group. We wanted to find things we could ALL do together, versus say, ziplining or something that the little ones/my mom wouldn’t be able to do. This one sounded well suited to all ages.

Guambalimba Preservation Park

The main focus was to see some nature and animals, plus they had a pool and beach that we were supposed to be able to use after.

We took a bus to the park and then our tour guide took us through a rainforesty area to an insectarium and then to a macaw area.

Crossed a cool suspension bridge- much smaller than the ones we did in Costa Rica, but still wobbly fun. 🙂

Then the macaws!! So pretty. There were a whole bunch just loose in the wild but in this one area- they feed them/care for these certain birds so they stay around without being in captivity or anything.

They let us hold some of them and pose for pics! This was exciting for all the kids, of course.

“Monkey Town”

The highlight for everyone was what the park called Monkey Town. There were a bunch of white faced capuchin monkeys that live in the park and are also cared for, vaccinated, etc but live free in the trees there. They jump right on your head or crawl on your shoulders and they are sooooooo cute!!! Asher said, “Well this was a once in a lifetime experience!” Lol.

Here’s me!! I was laughing so hard because it felt so funny with their soft little paws all over my head. ❤️

A great one of Asher:

Oh, and there was a mama/baby combo that still just jumped all over! I thought maybe she would steer clear but she must have trusted no one would hurt her baby. Haha.

Sooo sweet!!
This guy just scaled Ivan like a tree.

I love this one!!

At the end this guy didn’t want to get off of Asher’s head! Hahaha. He sat there for so long.

You can’t “pet” them because not all of them like that, so you just have to stand pretty still and let them crawl and jump on you. Very cool. They said to not “scream” in surprise when they land on you because if the monkeys get startled they might scream back and apparently they might slap you! Lol!! That would be pretty funny to get slapped by a monkey. 😆😆 They were all very sweet and we didn’t have any slapping issues. 😉

After we thought we would have time to all use the adjacent beach, but turns out we only had like 45 minutes before our bus ride back. I had assumed we would have at least 1-2 hours… this just wasn’t enough time, unfortunately. It was annoying because the “all aboard” time for the ship wasn’t until later, but we were stuck with what this excursion allowed. Oh well.

We walked down to spend a few minutes wading in the water and the two little ones swam for a few minutes at least.

Very pretty!!

On the way back to the ship, driving through the island:

Our ship
Cool art at the port

When we got back, some people headed back to the ship for a little cool-off break and lunch in the air conditioning. Ivan and I spotted a place with shrimp ceviche, which we always enjoy, so we ended up stopping for one to share, a beer, and a margarita with my parents quickly.

Then we spent the rest of the afternoon on the ship. The kids swam, played around, etc. My boys did the Flow Rider surf/boogie board thing for a long while.

Docked in Honduras
Having FUN
The boys have been learning all sorts of tricks this week

It was so beautiful out as we sailed away from Roatan in the early evening!! It was “tropical night” in the dining room, so we wore our tropical outfits we packed. 🙂

Took a few family pics on our room’s balcony:

Love this!!

And, some dining room shots….

They had a fun “parade” where the waiters all swung their napkins around and kids could join in all over the dining room. Asher and my nieces jumped in. 🙂

Handsome

I do not usually eat dessert, ever, at home… but apparently on a cruise I eat dessert every night. 😆

A gorgeous evening shot:

The show Monday night was an ice skating show. We went with all the little kids to this one and it was very good!! They did real ice skating like jumps and axles and even a back flip on ice. Very pretty costumes as well.

After the littles went to bed after the show, we stopped in the “English pub” on the ship, located in the Royal Promenade. There was a fantastic musician playing awesome cover songs that we really enjoyed.

In the pub

After that my parents turned in and Ivan and I went to find the boys. They were playing some mini golf:

They ended up going off to play some basketball I think? Ivan and I sat by the outdoor pool/dance party that was going on for a while. I ended up chatting for a while with a recently divorced lady who is on this cruise by herself! Interesting! I mean the idea of going on a cruise alone is interesting to me… I guess if you are very outgoing and don’t mind meeting other solo people/friends?? But in general I feel like cruising is best done with friends or family!!

The pool deck by night.. I didn’t get a shot of the dance party on other side. 🙂

  1. I think your experience with this excursion is what bothered my parents the most when they went on a cruise. They said they felt SO rushed and often wanted more time at the places they stopped but felt like they were rushing to get back on the ship on time. But they are not go go go kind of people. They kind of like a slower pace of light/like to soak up their surroundings/etc. So they decided they’d rather go back to one island versus stopping at several on a cruise. But that excursion looks and sounds amazing. I will have to show Paul this post. He will go wild over the monkeys! I also need to tell my former colleague that retired about this because he is known for his love of monkeys. We jokingly referred to ourselves as junior helper monkeys and had lots of stuffed monkeys in his cube. He’s kind of got that super likeable monkey kind of personality, too! I thought of you this week when Paul was watching a Wild Kratts episode about the basilisk lizard that you saw in Costa Rica!

I love your tropical outfits!! I especially like Asher’s bright shirt! It sounds like you are all having a blast!

  2. Wow, what an action packed day. Your kids will remember that forever! I think i like the idea of doing an excursion for part of the day and then having time to relax afterwards. I love the tropical outfits, and I’m looking forward to reading about the next few days!
