My calendar this morning raises a very good point.
Specifically, the last line:
This sounds very simple, but the truth is, it’s much easier said than done.
Today’s quote is talking about gratitude, and that it really comes down to simply thinking more about what is right and less about what is wrong. I think this is a fantastic way to break down the concept, but that last line stood out to me.
Simple ≠ Easy
There are many things in life that are this way. In fact, if you really pause and think about it, MOST of life is really quite simple.
Eat nutritious foods = a healthier lifestyle
Be kind to others = better relationships
Spend < Earn = solid financial state
Exercise daily = healthier heart
Do things that matter to you = a fulfilled life
Calories expended > calories consumed = lose weight
Forgive others = inner peace
You get the idea. These are all very straightforward equations.
I’ve heard a lot about this in the health/fitness world over the years. Many trainers like to emphasize the fact that weight loss, in general, is a quite simple scientific concept: if you burn more calories than you consume, you will lose weight. That’s it.
(Of course, there are various factors that do often come into play, and despite what many people think, a lower “weight” is not always what people actually want. They actually want to look good/ strong/ fit/ toned/ fill in the blank. Does it really matter how much they weigh, if they are happy with how they look and their health? Not really.)
But the concept is still pretty simple and straightforward when it comes to true “weight” loss. Same with gratitude, finances, relationships, happiness… When you peel back all of the various layers, life is not really that complicated. This is a fascinating concept to me!
It’s not rocket science, but I think it’s very easy to forget. I would say I am, generally speaking, a chronic overthinker. I can take a simple problem and find ways to magnify it, twist it, turn it, blow it up, you name it until it is larger than life. It’s a real talent! Haha. 🙂
I love this idea of going back to the root. Breaking it down and asking the question, “What is this really about? What is the simple truth here?”
None of the above is “easy” though. Eating less calories than you burn IS simple, but it’s still hard when faced with fresh lemon bars. Focusing on the good IS simple, but it’s still hard when your brain is tugging you to stare at a problem that crops up. That’s why I think it’s good to spend time reflecting on these types of things. Practice makes perfect. 😊
Anyway! This quote got me thinking this morning. I guess I’m in a contemplative mood. Kind of heavy for a dark, early Monday morning, huh? 🙂
I am grateful for socks. I just got some new ones and they feel really nice on my feet. I’m also just grateful that I HAVE socks at all. Brrrrr my toesies would be cold if I didn’t have socks to wear. (Also, do you like how I managed to turn this post from a deep, thoughtful one into a random comment about socks? Just like that. LOL! 😊)
